$560,000 Settlement for Wrongful Death of 64-Year-Old Woman With Schizophrenia

November 10, 2011

On December 13, 2005, a 64-year-old woman with schizophrenia died of dehydration. The investigation following her death revealed that the woman's psychiatrist had discontinued her anti-psychotic medication discontinued two weeks earlier after being informed that public aid was no longer covering her anti-psychotic drug. Rapoport Weisberg & Sims P.C. filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging that the failure to provide the woman with any anti-psychotic medication caused her to stop eating and drinking resulting in her death by dehydration. Separate settlements were reached with the woman's treating psychiatrist and the pharmacy over their failures to act and communicate properly resulting in the woman not receiving any medication for her schizophrenia. Joshua L. Weisberg of Rapoport Weisberg & Sims P.C. served as lead counsel.
