Melanie VanOverloop is an attorney at Rapoport Law Offices, P.C. dedicated to personal injury cases including construction negligence, products liability, medical malpractice, premises liability and auto liability. Melanie has extensive courtroom experience and has tried numerous cases to verdict - all of which have resulted in positive outcomes for her clients.

Melanie has proven to be a fierce advocate for her clients. In her first year of practice she obtained a record setting settlement in the state of Illinois.for a 96 year old man who slipped and fell on a freshly mopped floor. Melanie was part of a team that obtained a $3,900,000.00 settlement package on behalf a Local 1 Ironworker who was injured on a construction project. That same year she was part of a trial team that obtained a $3,200,000.00 settlement package for a Local 1 Ironworker who suffered extensive nerve damage on his dominant right arm while installing rebar in an unsafe work area.  In addition to her desire to assist people in need, Melanie strives to become an accomplished trial lawyer and is pleased to be learning from some of the top trial lawyers in the nation at Rapoport Law Offices, P.C. In 2014, Melanie was part of a trial team that obtained the second highest verdict in LaSalle County for a construction accident. Due to her impressive record representing her clients, Melanie was selected as a 2014, 2015 and 2016 Illinois Super Lawyer Rising Star - a distinction that is limited to 2.5 percent of the attorneys within Illinois. In 2015 she was also named an Emerging Lawyer by Leading Lawyers magazine.

Melanie is actively involved in the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association where she is a founding chair of the ITLA Young Lawyers Division.  Additionally, she is currently the chair of the WBAI Civil Litigation Committee and a former editor of the WBAI Newsletter. Melanie is the published author of the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education Chapter on Construction Negligence and co-author of the Chapter on Limitations. She is also the co-author of the ITLA Medical Malpractice Trial Notebook Chapter on Settlements.

Born and raised in Chicago, Melanie got her bachelor's degree in history and political science from Purdue University in 2007, and then returned to Chicago to attend law school at Loyola University of Chicago School of Law.  At Loyola Law School, Melanie excelled in the trial practice programs, earning a certificate in advocacy.  She was able to use these skills to assist in teaching the Law in American Society class at Nicholas Senn High School.  While there, she also prepared the high school juniors and seniors to compete in the Circuit Court of Cook County's Mock Trial Competition.

Representative Cases

  • $3,900,000.00 – Settlement package for a Local 1 ironworker who suffered an L5-S1 disc herniation and labral hip tear while he was attempting to move a 1,000 lb. steel beam on his own and he tripped on a piece of plywood decking.
  • $3,200,000.00 – Settlement package for a Local 1 ironworker who suffered extensive nerve damage on his dominant right arm while installing rebar in an unsafe work area. The package included the $2,000,000.00 policy limits, a waiver of the $668,172.71 workers compensation lien and a medical set aside in the amount of $530,956.74. This settlement was reached after a week and a half long trial in front of Judge Susan Zwick
  • $1,500,000.00 – Settlement for a young female that was rear-ended by a semi-truck and caused to suffer injuries which led to her death. The truck driver contended that the plaintiff suddenly moved in front of his truck and slammed on her brakes. There was evidence that the plaintiff’s vehicle ran out of gas which caused her to slow down
  • $1,375,000.00 – Settlement for a 95-year old man who was attempting to leave his condo building when he was caused to slip and fall on a freshly mopped floor in the lobby of the building. This is the highest settlement in Illinois for an individual over the age of 90
  • $1,000,000.00 – Policy limits settlement for an elderly woman who was repeatedly abused by a nursing home and suffered injuries which ultimately led to her death
  • $958,303,38.00 - Verdict in Cook County for a mason that was injured when the brick wall he was working on collapsed due to high winds. The pretrial offer was $50,000.00.
  • $870,000.00 – Settlement package for a Local 448 painter who injured his back while carrying a spray pump up several flights of stairs. The plaintiff was denied access to use the elevator to move the spray pump
  • $524,608.82 – Verdict in LaSalle County for a laborer who was electrocuted while directing a crane operation near power lines. The plaintiff lost his left fifth digit but was returned to work full duty within five months of the occurrence. This is the second highest verdict in LaSalle County for a construction case
  • $360,000.00 – Settlement package for a Local 1 ironworker who tripped on an anchor bolt and suffered from left shoulder subacromial impingement. He was off of work for four months and returned to work with no restrictions for his left shoulder
